Ideas
In Frederick Karl's critic work, he stated on page 124 something that I thought was very interesting. In the last body paragrpahs he says, "... Both he and Conrad penetrated into the darkness, the darkness entered into when people sleep or when their conscious sleep, when they are free to pursue secret wishes, whether in dreams, like Freud's analysands, or in actuality like Kurtz and his followers." This statement can also not only be pertained to Kurtz but Marlow as well. Marlow would dream about Kurtz and have this obssesion with being loyal to him but before that have an obssesion of finding him. Because he would imagine it, that powerfullness caused him to actually complete his "mission" He is going after his "secret wishes". Also at the end of the novel when Marlow lies to Kurtz's intended shows that he is also continuing his wishes although he is being a hypocrite. He felt as though it was his responsibility to be loyal to Kurtz and that is exactly what Marlow did until the very end.

Heart Of Darkness
I don't like how the book ends. It's so sudden as though something more is supposed to happen. Also, all throught the book there is darkness portrayed even until the very end. Marlow at the end lies to Kurtz's wife, telling her that the last words out of Kurtz's mouth was her name but that was not true. The lie is the main source of the darkness. But he lied to her for her benefit, he felt as though he was obligated to tell her what she wanted to hear instead of the truth. Although it was a lie, it was out of concern for her well being.

College Reading
I think in college the reading is going to be a lot more than it is right now. I also feel as though the silent reading we have been doing in class has been very beneficial. It's the perfect opportunity to sit in a quiet room and just read. I think if you take that idea of sitting in a quiet area and just read the pages that you're supposed to then it gets easier. Also you have to be determined to finish whatever reading you have to do by breaking it up accordingly throughout the week. In order to be successful in reading you don't neseccarily have to like what you're reading, you just have to pretend like you do.

Freud Discussion
I thought the discussion about Freud's theory was interesting and wierd at the same time. His theory has evolved into several of great novels that we read today. In comparrison, Freuds darkness and pessemism is able to go well with, Heart of Darkness as this novel too continues to be dark. Although Freuds theory sounds rather strange and unpleasant, and quite odd for society to think of these things in todays atmosphere it may have not been that way before. It may have been a normal thing that wasn't neseccarily shamed upon as it is today.

Heart of Darkness 3
I thought that the scene where the native was beaten brutally, just because he was suspected of being the one that caused the fire was inhumane and brutal. Violence to that extent was not neseccary. The novel continues to be dark.

Heart of Darkness 2
I found it really strange, how someone would kill another person over a simple black hen. This action could possibly be foreshadowing violence all throughout the novel. Shortly after Marlow encounters two women whom he think are evil or dark. There have been two encounters where the situation was dark and violent. This could be the continuing darkness of the rest of the novel.

Heart of Darkness
In the begining of Heart of Darkness, a dark setting is portrayed through the authors choice of tone and wording. As Marlow begins his story, he consistently avoids the reality of the current situations of the people, therefore causing a dark feel for the audience. This is shown with the battle between the Romans and the Gauls.
