Question: Why is it that Elizabeth is not caught up with the need to find someone that will be able to support her economically, but someone she can love.
Thesis: In Pride and Predjudice, Jane Austen
During the 1800s, women were seemed inferior compared to men. This is because, women were not allowed to own property, and they did not have a say in almost anything. Jane Austen, the author of Pride and Predjudice, is able to portray the role of women through the girls, throughout the novel. in the first couple of pages we are first introduced to Mrs. Bennett, the first women we see in the novel. The way she acts is the way women are supposed to act. For example, she is desperate for all her daughter to be married off to someone of a higher social class so they can be stable in an economic standpoint and also have a good name because of their social class. This is why she is so consistent in trying to get her husband in trying to talk to Mr. Bingley. After a while we are introduced to Elizabeth Bingley, the second oldest daughter In the family. She is opposed to the fact that she cannot have a say and she shows this with the proposal of Mr. Collins, where she rejects his offer because she feels that in order to marry someone you must love that person. She is not concerned of the fact that if he can mantain her or not. Jane, the eldest daughter also shows that she does not care for money because she is not interested in his money but instead his personality.
