Mr. Collins and Elizabeth
When Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth, it was in a very conceited way. Collins not once stated how much he loved Elizabeth, or even at the least compliment her; Collins simply spoke of himself the whole time, he mentioned things like, how great of a person he is. Even the way he delivered his message, instead of a proposal coming from the heart, the way it shoudld be, it came from his mind. He did not seem as though he was delivering with much value or care but instead he made it sound like a sermon which is something he gives very often. He stated his propositions with "firstly, secondly, and thirdly". Elizabeth was undelighted and smartly rejected his proposal. Collins initial response was, oblivious. He thought that when she said no she actually meant yes. Fsiling to even listen or give her much consideration, he also said to her that if she does not marry him then no other man will ever ask her and she is to live the rest of her life just going from one to place to the other because she will be poor and unable to sustain herself. During this time period, women are not allowed to own properties, therefore as soon as her father, Mr. Bennett passes none of the girls including the mother would be given any inheritance money whatsoever. The only way she would survive would be by getting married. He says this not only because he believes that it is true but also in order to convince her to say yes. Either way, Collins does not love Eizabeth and the only reason he is even proposing to her is because he is the one that inherents all of the property after Mr. Bennetts passing. And in order for him to clear himself from all guilt I'm return he wishes to propose. Elizabeth on the other hand believes that marriage should contain love, because without love then it it just a empty marriage. Also it may be because she is falling in love with Darcy.
