Outline for P+P

Why is it that Elizabeth is not caught up with the need to find someone that will be able to support her economically?

Paragph 1: Introduce socitey in the 1800s.
  • Women need to be dependent on men
  • If the head of the house dies and he only had girls. none of them are allowed to keep any property
  • Women at this time are not allowed to own property
  • The only way to have a good lifestyle + social class name is to marry someone who is superior (EX: Darcy + Charles)
Paragraph 2: Mrs. Bennett

  • Mrs. Bennett's need to marry her daughters off
    • She is worried that as soon as Mr. Bennett passes away, there will be nothing left for her and her daughters.
    • The reason for which she wants them to marry to someone with a higher social class name.
    • She is more concerened about money opposed to having actual love.
      • Tries to force Elizabeth into marrying Collins for this very reason
      • Doesn't agree with why Elizabeth does not want to marry him
  • Mr. Bennett is not like this, he supports with the decisions Elizabeth would like to make for herself.

Paragraph 3: Elizabeth + Jane:

  • Although these two sisters foil eachother in their personalities, they both foil their mother with the topic of love and money
  • Jane:
    • Jane loves Bingley for who he is: his personality, humor, etc. She is not interested in being with him for his money
      • The reason of why Mrs. Bennett approves is because he is quite a wealthy man
  • Elizabeth:
    • Elizabeth is getting older and has not found anyone special yet that she would be interested in, other than darcy.
      • Usually in this time period women would start to become nervous and frantic on what would happen to her
    • She is proposed to by Collins and she turns him down. Collins mentions to her that no other person would ever ask her. She is still not shaken by the thought.
